Yoga | Janelle Monae, Jidenna: Decently Sexy

miss monaee

The Electric Lady herself, Miss Janelle Monae, along side fellow Wondaland artiste, Jidenna, released the catchy “Yoga” on the 30th of March 2015. Just under a fortnight later, the video was released [Check the video out here]

And this video gives me hope for the future of music, especially by black female artistes.

Many weeks ago I posted a blog post titled ‘Black Woman, Take back your Dignity’ about how I felt about the widespread commercialisation and objectification of the black female, and how black female artistes have embraced this. I remember reading one of the comments (Thank you guys so much for the comments, I really do appreciate it) mentioning Janelle Monae as one of the women who doesn’t drag the black female identity into the mud.

janelle quote

Miss Monae, a.k.a Cindi Mayweather, best known for her flawless make-up, decent black and white looks and clean music [Permit me to quote her “Black and white tux, and no need for no other colours, t-t-t-talking ’bout, wh-wh-why don’t she change her clothes, well they ain’t seem to mind the last three times I posed in vogue” … Alright… back to the matter] stands up for decency, uniqueness, creativity, and living a balanced and happy life. In this video, she does well to keep her word and stand her grounds; she definitely doesn’t compromise her values.

I remember when I saw a tweet that had a link to this video, and it said something about Miss Mayweather being sexy and I was like (in my head) “No Janelle, don’t do this to me, you been giving me hope, don’t be like the others!” And, she didn’t disappoint, she just made me love her even more.

Let’s analyse the video (including the lyrics) together, shall we?

You know what, Let’s look at the lyrics first (My comments are in bold font)

[Verse 1: Janelle]
Party at the beach down in Copacabana
Sipping kalapishi got my black yoga pants on
Me and Brittany, we’ve been down in Atlanta
Sweating in the club, call me Dirty Diana
Flexing like a yogi, drop it down with your hands up
Do a handstand, bend it back, put your legs up (take notes people, try that yoga pose at home)
I ain’t got no worries, I’m my own private dancer
My own private dancer (not subjected to the male gaze or approval, its for herself and her pleasure, her health)

[Pre-Chorus]
I wanna last, wanna last forever
I wanna dance, wanna dance all night
I wanna last, wanna last forever
I wanna dance, dance, dance all night

[You need to be fit as hell to do that, right]

[Chorus]
Baby bend over, baby bend over
Baby bend over, let me see you do that yoga
Baby bend over, baby bend over
Baby bend over, let your booty do that yoga

[Verse 2: Janelle]
Crown on my head but the world on my shoulder
I’m too much a rebel, never do what I’m supposed ta
Bend it never break it, baby watch and I’ma show ya
Stretching on my cash, got my money doing yoga
Sometimes I’m peachy, and sometimes I’m vulgar
Even when I’m sleeping I got one eye open
You cannot police me, so get off my areola
Get off my areola

(She may be referring to the battle against breast cancer? encouraging other women in the battle against the disease? I don’t know…)

[Pre-Chorus]

[Chorus]

At first glance, one would bring out the torches and pitch forks cos the lyrics appear sexual. Well guess what? All Miss Monae is doing, is hyping you up to get that body in shape by doing yoga. It’s really that simple. Nothing sexual about wanting to last forever. Nothing sexual about bending over, its actually a yoga pose, darling.

Lets look at the choreography and clothing shall we?

Girl, she still in her favourite colours!

Now, notice how even though the word ‘booty’ did resound in this song, but there was no sign of any butt cheeks. None whatsoever. No cleavage. No low rise. No see-through’s. Nothing provocative in any way. Nothing.

Miss Monae managed to stick to the point of this song, and that is simply exercising, without allowing her body be an object. Parts of the video where her booty was supposed to shoot out like this one

booty cut

the shot was cut in a way that you wouldn’t see it. This happened often throughout the video. The camera left the eyes wanting to see more and not giving it. Less is more, and what makes a woman sexy is the part of her you can’t see.

I also love how none of the dancers looked unreal. You know, the kind of body you know had some needle work done. I love how real and subtly sexy Miss Monae looks. Her waist isn’t extra tiny, her booty isn’t extra big, and we can’t even see the flesh on her chest. She’s decently sexy. Very simple.

Oh, and lest I forget, I just have to share a video of Janelle Monae doing yoga, saw it on her instagram a while ago

So yeah, I’ve said as much as I can say, I have an early morning tomorrow.

Do check out the video and tell me what you think by leaving a comment.

Also… check out what Radio.com says about the video, I couldn’t agree more

*singing* Let me see you do that yoga!
